In 2006 there were:

39.5 million people living with HIV (34.1 to 47.1 million)

4.3 million new infections

2.9 million AIDS-related deaths

Why campaign?

The facts:

  • In developing countries, 6 million people with HIV/AIDS need ARVs NOW!
  • In 2006, approx. 40,000 people were receiving ARVs - less than 8% of those who need ARVs
  • Only 1% of Africans with HIV/AIDS receive ARVs despite the fact there are more than 26 million Africans with HIV/AIDS
  • More than 75% of adults and 90% of children, who urgently need treatment, are not receiving it.

Action points:

  • In 2005 the UK led world leaders in promising HIV treatment for all by 2010…..lets make sure they keep that promise!
  • Email Hilary Benn, secretary of state for International Development
  • Write to your MP
  • Add your eyes to the SSAC eye petition….still watching, still waiting
  • Increase local awareness
  • Organise a speaker event at your branch
  • Request that the SSAC speaker tour 2007 come to your branch
  • Campaign on World AIDS Day and throughout the year
  • Educate students on the barriers to access to treatment (TRIPS!!)
  • Join forces….with PharmAware, GHAP and other Medsin campaigns!
